Why it matters

Why Manual Handling Matters in Construction

Body stressing is the largest single cause of serious injury claims in Australian construction. Most of those injuries are not one big lift — they are years of sheets, bags, bricks and overhead work on changing ground, in the heat, to a deadline.

  • Carrying plasterboard, ply and glass
  • Carrying timber, pipe and conduit
  • Lifting 20 kg bags into mixers
  • Handling bricks, blocks and pavers
  • Pushing loaded wheelbarrows
  • Screeding and finishing concrete
  • Fixing ceilings and conduit overhead
  • Tiling and flooring on your knees
  • Working in trenches and roof spaces
  • Carrying up stairs and ladders
  • Running breakers and grinders
  • Setting up scaffold and formwork

Safe manual handling is more than “bend your knees”

Technique alone is not a reliable control. Managing hazardous manual tasks on site means working through a risk management process — from the delivery booking and the pre-start onward — before anyone puts a hand on the load.

  1. 1Identifying hazardous tasks
  2. 2Counting the risk factors
  3. 3Planning the delivery and route
  4. 4Considering ground, weather and fatigue
  5. 5Using aids, hoists and lifters
  6. 6Following the SWMS and site rules
  7. 7Working as a team on team lifts
  8. 8Reporting hazards and symptoms early

Questions

Construction & Trades Manual Handling FAQ

No. General construction induction training — the White Card — is a legal requirement before you can carry out construction work, and it is delivered by registered training organisations. This course does not provide or replace it.

This is non-accredited manual handling training that adds to the White Card and your site inductions. You still need both of those to work on site.

Yes. Apprentices are usually given the heaviest and most repetitive handling on a site from the first week, and the course starts from what a manual task is before moving on to sheets, bags, bricks, team lifts and how to raise a problem without looking like you are complaining.

Some employers ask apprentices to complete it before their first day, alongside the White Card.

No. Australian WHS law does not set a maximum weight for a lift. The move from 40 kg to 20 kg bags was a genuine improvement, but the risk of a task depends on how often it is repeated, how far the load is carried, the posture, the ground and the weather — not the figure on the bag.

Module 6 covers why a 20 kg bag carried forty times across a site is still a hazardous manual task, and what to do about it. Some sites set their own guidance figures; follow yours.

Yes. As a sole trader you are both the business and the worker, so the duty to manage manual handling risk in your own work sits with you. The course covers planning deliveries and setting up the job so you handle materials once, choosing aids that one person can use, and what to do when a lift is not going to plan and there is nobody to call stop.

It also explains what you can ask the principal contractor for on a larger site — crane time, hoist access, a sensible drop zone.

Yes. Heat brings fatigue on early and fatigue removes the control that keeps a loaded barrow on the boards or a sheet upright in the wind. The course treats heat, wind, rain and end-of-day fatigue as manual handling risk factors and covers planning heavy handling for the cooler part of the day, breaks and when to stop.

Yes. Hand-arm vibration from breakers, grinders, rotary hammers and rattle guns is a recognised manual task risk factor. The course covers the early symptoms, tool choice, sharp bits, trigger time and rotation, and why anti-vibration gloves are not a substitute for those.

Most learners allow approximately 45–60 minutes, and you can stop and pick it up again on your phone. The training and assessment are free to complete; you pay A$49 only if you pass and want the certificate.

75% on the 20-question assessment. Attempts are unlimited, and a retry only asks you to revisit the questions you got wrong.

Many builders and subcontractors accept it as evidence of manual handling theory knowledge, alongside the White Card, site inductions and their own SWMS briefings and practical instruction. Individual employers and sites set their own requirements, so check with yours if you are unsure.

Every certificate has a unique number that an employer can verify online or by scanning the QR code.

No. Site inductions, SWMS, toolbox talks and practical, supervised instruction on your employer's aids and plant remain essential, and they always take precedence. This course gives you the manual handling theory those sessions build on.

No. This is non-accredited online workplace training and issues a Certificate of Completion. It is separate from the nationally recognised HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely unit, does not provide a Statement of Attainment, and is not a high risk work licence or a White Card.

General questions about pricing, verification and accreditation status are answered on the site-wide FAQ.
