Why Manual Handling Matters in Offices
Office staff rarely think of themselves as manual handlers, yet musculoskeletal injuries are common in office-based work. They come from two directions: the posture held for hours at a desk that has never been adjusted, and the heavy or awkward lift nobody planned — the archive purge, the event set-up, the delivery left at reception.
- Sitting or standing at a workstation for long periods
- Working from a laptop without a stand or dock
- Lifting and carrying archive boxes
- Handling paper cartons and stationery deliveries
- Replacing water cooler bottles and toner
- Sorting and delivering mail and parcels
- Moving monitors, computers and furniture
- Setting up tables, chairs and AV for events
- Reaching into high shelving and compactus units
- Carrying loads through fire doors and up stairs
- Setting up a workstation at home
Safe manual handling is more than “lift with your legs”
Technique alone is not a reliable control. In an office, the reliable controls are a workstation set up properly, movement through the day, storage designed so heavy items sit at waist height, a trolley on every floor and a two-minute plan before any lift you were not expecting.
- 1Identifying hazards, at the desk and in the storeroom
- 2Assessing the task, load and route
- 3Setting up the workstation properly
- 4Designing storage around the body
- 5Using trolleys, steps and adjustable equipment
- 6Following workplace procedures
- 7Asking for help instead of carrying
- 8Reporting early discomfort and near misses

Office & General Workplace Manual Handling FAQ
Yes. Sustained posture is a recognised manual task risk factor, and most office musculoskeletal injuries build up from a workstation that was never adjusted rather than from a single lift. The course covers chair, screen, keyboard and mouse set-up, sit-stand desks, laptops and movement breaks.
It also covers the occasional lift that desk-based staff still do — the archive box, the paper carton, the monitor for a new starter — which is where the acute injuries happen.
Yes. Module 2 explains how WHS duties extend to home-based work, and Module 6 covers setting up a home workstation with the equipment most people actually have, and how to report discomfort from home.
Yes. Each person completes the course individually and receives their own Certificate of Completion with a unique number that can be verified online or by scanning the QR code, which gives you a verifiable record per employee.
Bulk purchasing and central reporting are not offered yet. If you are planning a rollout for a team or organisation, contact us and we will help you set it up.
Yes. Module 6 covers archive boxes (a full Type 1 box can weigh 15–20 kg), paper cartons, water cooler bottles, toner, mail and deliveries, moving monitors and computers, event set-up with tables, chairs and AV cases, stairs and lifts, and how to design storage so the heavy items sit at waist height.
Module 7 covers the equipment for those tasks — document trolleys, sack trucks, platform steps, chair dollies and mail cages — and how to check it before use.
No. The course teaches the principles so you can set up a workstation sensibly and recognise when something is wrong. An ergonomic or workstation assessment looks at you, at your desk, with your equipment, and your employer's own checklist or assessor takes precedence.
Most learners allow approximately 45–60 minutes. The training and assessment are free to complete; you pay A$49 only if you pass and want the certificate.
75% on the 20-question assessment. Attempts are unlimited, and a retry only asks you to revisit the questions you got wrong.
Many organisations accept it as evidence of manual handling awareness training for office and general staff, alongside their own induction and workstation assessments. Employers set their own requirements, so check with your manager or WHS team if you are unsure.
Every certificate has a unique number that an employer can verify online or by scanning the QR code.
No. Your employer's induction, workstation checklist, equipment instruction and procedures remain essential and always take precedence. This course gives you the general knowledge those sit on top of.
No. This is non-accredited online workplace training and issues a Certificate of Completion. It is separate from the nationally recognised HLTWHS005 Conduct manual tasks safely unit and does not provide a Statement of Attainment.
General questions about pricing, verification and accreditation status are answered on the site-wide FAQ.
